    2017 Sino-US Medical Education Seminar Held in Wuhan

    From April 14th to 16th, 2017 Sino-US medical education seminar was held at WUSM, hosted by China Higher Education Society of Medical Education Professional Committee, organized by Wuhan University and the University of Chicago. Experts from 23 domestic and foreign higher medical institutions participated in the meeting. It is another Sino-US medical education seminar after 2012.

    Guo Li, Deputy Secretary-General of China Higher Education Society of Medical Education Professional Committee; He Ju, Director of National Medical Examination Center, Melina Hale, Vice Provost of the University of Chicago; Professor Renslow Sherer, Director of International AIDS Training Center of the University of Chicago and Head of the U.S.side of Wuhan University Medical Education Reform Project; Feng Youmei, Executive President of Wuhan University and President of WUSM; Wang Chuanzhong, Vice Party Secretary of Wuhan University, Vice-President of Wuhan University, Secretary of the Party Working Committee of WUSM; Deng Yong, Deputy Director of the Enrollment Office of WHU, attended the meeting.

    At the opening ceremony, Wang Chuanzhong delivered a speech on behalf of Wuhan University. Wang pointed out that in recent years, China has carried out a series of new initiatives in the field of medical education and physician training, including the medical education certification system, the empirical study of the physician qualification examination, the standardized training system for residents the pilot training of specialists; A number of medical colleges have made great efforts to construct curriculum system, reform teaching methods, strengthen the examination evaluations, promote the development of teachers teaching, and improve the clinical skills and teaching environment, all of which stimulate the improvement of medical personnel training. The seminar provides a good platform for Chinese and foreign experts to exchange ideas and learn from each other. Ms. Melina Hale, on behalf of the University of Chicago, spoke highly of the cooperation between the two universities. She said this pragmatic cooperation not only promotes the medical education reform of Wuhan University, but also contributes to the teachers’ development and students’ overseas exchange of the University of Chicago, and she hoped that the two universities will deepen the cooperation in the future.

    Medical educational experts from home and abroad gave reports under the topics "National Medical Education Reform Policy and Progress” "Innovative Medical Personnel Training Mode” "Medical Curriculum Integration” "Teaching Methods and Evaluation Methods Reform” "Medical Experiment Teaching and Clinical Practice Teaching Reform” "Medical Teacher Teaching Training and Career Development” "Resident Physician / Specialist Standardization Training” “Clinical Practicing Physician Qualification Phased Examination". And the participants had a heated discussion on the topics.

    Guo Li, Deputy Secretary-General of China Higher Medical Education Association of Medical Education Committee concluded that in order to develop from a big country to a powerful country in medical education, China should keep abreast of the world medical education development direction. We are supposed to learn good experience of medical education from developed countries combined with China’s reality and turn it into an effective way to promote the development of our medical education and improve the quality of personnel training; In recent years, the training of medical talents has attracted more and more attention. Wuhan University and the University of Chicago have cultivated talents to provide a reference for the training of talents in our country. It also provides an example for medical education to cultivate high-level medical talents.

    During the meeting, Feng Youmei met with Melina Hale to exchange views on Sino-US medical education reform and cooperation. They looked back on the development and progress of Sino-US medical education reform, and also made a prospect for the future cooperation. Sino-US medical education reform project has gradually developed from the curriculum integration, teacher training to student exchange, research cooperation, hospital training and other multi-level cooperation since 2008. On one hand, the reform project has been well recognized by domestic and foreign universities; on the other hand, it provides a new way and a new idea for the continuous development of the two universities’ medical education.

    It is reported that in 2008, Wuhan University School of Medicine signed a teaching reform cooperation agreement with the University of Chicago School of Medicine to explore and carry out comprehensive reform of clinical medicine education. In 2011, the modular integration curriculum system was extended to the training of students in long –year schooling program, followed by full participation of students in seven-year and eight–year schooling program. In 2014, approved by department of undergraduate education Wuhan University, the curriculum system was fully implemented in all clinical medical colleges of Wuhan University.(Author: Wu Xia; Song Min)
