About Wuhan University School of Medicine (WUSM)

Located at the foot of Luojia Mountain and surrounded by the East Lake, WUSM is a picturesque land decorated with luxuriant greenness and mellow fragrance of flowers.

With its origin traced back to Hubei Provincial Medical College in 1943, Wuhan University School of Medicine changed its name to Hubei Medical College in 1953 and Hubei Medical University in 1993, and was finally renamed as Wuhan University School of Medicine (WUSM) in 2000.

WUSM consists of School of Basic Medical Science, First School of Clinical Medicine, Second School of Clinical Medicine, School of Stomatology, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, HOPE Nursing School, Vocational and Technical College, Animal Biosafety Level-III Laboratory, Medical Research Institute, 8 affiliated hospitals: Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, Hospital of Stomatology Wuhan University, Asia Heart Clinical Medical School (Wuhan Asia heart hospital), Tongren Clinical Medical School (Tongren Hospital of Wuhan University), Wuhan General Hospital Clinical Medical School (Wuhan General Hospital of Guangzhou Military), Enshi Clinical College of Wuhan University, Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University School of Medicine. Abundant majors are provided for medical students, including Clinical Medicine (five-year, "5+3", eight-year), Stomatology Medicine (five-year, "5+3", eight-year), Preventive Medicine, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biopharmacy, Nursing, Global Health and Basic Medical Science etc. At present, WUSM has 6573 registered students in total, among which 3288 are undergraduates, 1945 are master’s candidates, 696 are doctoral candidates, and 644 are international students (108 of which are master’s candidates).

WUSM has a group of well-structured faculty with strong teaching, medical treatment, and scientific research. 1561 teachers have senior professional titles, and 205 teachers are Ph.D supervisors, among which, there are 2 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 national prestigious teachers, 5 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

WUSM has 4 Level-A Doctoral Subjects (Basic Medical Science, Clinical Medical Science, Stomatology); 4 Post-doctoral Research Centers (Basic Medical Science, Clinical Medical Science, Stomatology); 4 subjects ranking top 1% in the ESI Global Subject list(Clinical Medical Science, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biology and Biochemistry, Immunology), 22 National Key Subject (11 of which rank top 10 nationwide); 2 Key Laboratories of Ministry of Education: Stomatology Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, Combinatorial Biosynthesis & New Drug Discovery Laboratory, 7 Key Laboratories of Hubei Province. “Wuhan University Global Health Research Center”, in which many schools participate, was identified as Hubei Provincial key research base for humanistic social science. Animal Biosafety Level-III Laboratory is the first state-approved high-level animal biology security laboratory, and obtained international AAALAC (American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care) accreditation. Moreover, it is the biggest and most multi-functional A3 Animal Laboratory in China. Medical Research Institute is the clinical issues-oriented research innovation center of high-level talents, committed to being one of the top medical research institutions across the world.

In recent two decades, WUSM has successfully undertaken nearly 2000 national, provincial scientific research projects; obtained over 500 significant scientific and technological achievements; and cultivated over 360 national, provincial, and municipal prize-winning scientific and technological fruitful results. Among them, there are 1 Second Prize of National Technology Invention Award (year 2000), 5 Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award (year 2001, 2004, 2009, 2011, 2015), 1 China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, and 2 Third Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award (year 1997, 1999).

WUSM has“Reform Pilot Project of Innovative Medical Talents Cultivation”,“Reform Pilot Project of Five-year Clinical Medical Talents Cultivation Model”,“5+3 Clinical Medical Talents Cultivation Model”, and these three projects have been listed as “Pilot Project of Outstanding Doctor Education Cultivation Plan” by Chinese Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health. Clinical Skills Comprehensive Training Center has been listed as Undergraduate Teaching Project by Chinese Ministry of Education in 2012. Stomatology is the Ministry of Education featured program. Clinical Medical Education and Stomatology are Hubei Provincial brand-specialty. WUSM has 2 national superior courses (Dentistry, Oral Biology), 2 national bilingual education model course (Medical Immunology, Human Anatomy), 1 national public lecture (First Aid General Knowledge), 1 virtual simulation experiment teaching center (Medical Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center), 13 provincial superior courses (Internal Medicine, Pharmacology, Hygiene, Human Anatomy, Pathological Physiology, Medical Immunology, Parasitology, Clinical Biochemistry & Biochemistry Test, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology, Prosthodontics, Pharmaceutical Analysis), 2 national level teaching team (Medical Functional Experiment, Oral Medicine). WUSM has Experimental Teaching Center of Basic Medicine, Experimental Teaching Center of Clinical Skills, Pharmacy Experiment Center, and these three centers are provincial model centers of Experimental Teaching. Experimental Teaching Center of Clinical Skills is the examiner training center for medical licensing examination of Ministry of Health.

International education cooperation is greatly highlighted. “Seven-year Sino-French Medical Experimental Class” was co-established by clinical medical program and Université de Lorraine. “Eight-year Sino-French Medical Experimental Class” was launched in 2013. Over 200 students have been selected to study in France by the end of 2016. Clinical Medicine Teaching Reform Pilot Class was co-established with the University of Chicago in 2013. Management team and professors from the University of Chicago participated in teaching and management work and carried out all-round clinical-oriented reforms on curriculum system, teaching methods, student evaluation. In 2014, the new curriculum system was spread to the clinical medical colleges at all levels. Wuhan University co-founded HOPE Nursing School with the World Health Foundation. International Nursing Class was opened in 2011 and delivered in English. This class selects 3-4 excellent undergraduates to study and exchange in America. “3+1+1” Cooperation and Exchange Agreement was co-founded by Public Health Program and Public Health College, University of Hawaii. In recent years, 27 students have been sent to Georgia, U.S. for Ph.D studies. Meanwhile, over 50 international students from famous universities in the U.S., France, Germany, Japan, and other countries are admitted to study in WUSM every year. WUSM signed a memorandum of cooperation with the University of Texas Medical Center to strengthen teaching and research cooperation, such as teacher and student exchanges and co-sponsored academic activities. WUSM signed an academic cooperation agreement with the University of Montpellier, France to build WHU Anti-Aging Research Center, and carry out strategy and policy research on prevention and control of human aging.

Wuhan University School of Medicine lays emphasis on student’s cultivation of creation, innovation, entrepreneurial traits. We encourage undergraduates to take part in research and innovation training programs. Many innovative and entrepreneurial programs get support by the country and Wuhan University each year. Undergraduate Entrepreneurial Team won 1 Gold Award and 1 Silver Award of the “Challenge Cup”. 2 dissertations have been rated as National Excellent 100 Doctoral Dissertation.
