On March 25, the internationally renowned cardiology journal JAMA Cardiology published the latest results of the research by Professor Huang Congxin of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University. The paper is titled “Association of Cardiac Injury With Mortality in Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19 inWuhan, China”.

JAMA Cardiology is the cardiovascular section of JAMA with an impact factor of 10.133. The results of this study showed that the incidence of myocardial injury in hospitalized patients with COVID19 was 19.7%. The appearance of myocardial injury predicts a 3-4 fold increase in hospital deaths.

While fighting the coronavirus with full strength, the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine in Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University and the Institute of Cardiovascular Disease of Wuhan University have actively conducted clinical research on COVID19 and cardiovascular disease by using valuable clinical data.

The team research found that cardiovascular disease is not only an important comorbidity of patients with COVID19, but also a common complication, which has a greater impact on the treatment and prognosis of patients. The study included 416 patients with COVID19 who were hospitalized at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University from January 20 to February 10, 2020. The relationship between cardiac indicators and prognosis was analyzed, and the proportion of myocardial injury was found to be up to 19.7%. Most of these patients are elderly, often accompanied by a variety of chronic diseases.

Through survival analysis and multivariate regression models, it was found that the in-hospital mortality of patients with myocardial injury was as high as 51.2%, while that of non-myocardial injury was only 4.5%.

Huang Congxin and his team pointed out that the results of this study provide important evidence for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients with COVID19, suggesting that the state of the heart should be actively evaluated during the treatment and patients with myocardial injury should be concerned and early intervention measures should be taken for the emergence of comorbidities. The results of this research are constructive to the clinical diagnosis and treatment of inpatients with COVID19 worldwide.
