In 2016, Wuhan University and Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone decided to jointly establish a Heavy Ion Medical Project. In September 2020, the construction of Wuhan University Heavy Ion Medical Center started, which is the only comprehensive project integrating medical treatment, scientific research and industrialization in China so far, with a total investment of about 2.4 billion RMB. This project is of strategic significance for breaking the monopoly of foreign high-end medical equipment and technology, and will form an oncology industry chain integrating cancer diagnosis and treatment, technology research and development, talent training, etc., to drive the development of the medical and health industry.

On July 4, the Vice President Tang Qizhu of WHU and the delegation visited Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone and held a meeting with Liu Ziqing, the secretary of Working Committee of Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone. The two sides agreed to  deepen cooperation and build a 100-billion-level heavy ion and relating Comprehensive Health innovation industry cluster.

Tang Qizhu said that, relying on the project, we will build a bioengineering discipline and innovation system integrating teaching, scientific research, training, social services and industrial incubation, and establish a world-class base for training bioengineering talents and promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.

Liu Ziqing extended his welcome to the visit of Tang Qizhu and the delegation. Liu Ziqing said that the cooperation with WHU has always been appreciated, and he hopes to promote the rapid development of the Comprehensive Health industry and the medical equipment manufacturing industry in the district and improve regional medical services by relying on the strength of WHU in scientific research. Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone will efficiently allocate all kinds of resources and make greater efforts to implement the project.

During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on the cooperation mode of the projects and the following steps to deepen cooperation and reached an early consensus.
